Destructive to metal, rust can also leave a bad stain on fabrics unless dealt with sharpish.

From carpets: Apply a paste of water and bicarbonate of soda to the rust, leave to penetrate for a couple of hours, then clean with carpet shampoo.

Rusty Floor. How To Remove Rust

From clothing: Apply a paste of lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda to the rust (test an inconspicuous area first), leave to penetrate for a couple of hours, then wash as usual.

From iron and steel: Rub down with sandpaper.

From metal bakeware: Sprinkle powdered detergent on the rust and rub with half a raw potato (yes, really).
