Why Use Oak In Your Self Build?

The appeal of oak is also an aesthetic one, as the wood is very pleasing on the eye, the nose and also to the touch.

Jason Harris, architect and managing director of T-Space, says, 'Oak is a wonderfully attractive timber, generally a biscuit colour with a characteristic aroma. It is conspicuous by silvery flashes that cut across the grain, known as medullary rays. Its colour can range from red to white, and originates from both Europe and America.'

'It becomes extremely hard over time - many apparently rotten medieval beams still have a heart that is rock hard. It has been used in the structure of buildings for centuries, predominantly for its strength but also because it performs well in a fire, when the outside will char, while the inside retains its integrity.'
