AutoCAD LT 2009

Professional packages include AutoCAD LT 2009, which is priced a hefty £1,372.64. System requirements are Windows Vista/XP. The sales pitch says this is '… software [that] lets you design, visualize, and document your ideas clearly and efficiently. From powerful 3D modeling through robust documentation and visualization tools, AutoCAD software provides the power and flexibility to work more productively from concept through completion.'

VectorWorks

VectorWorks is a second pro system that has several packages including VectorWorks Designer which '… provides advanced production, presentation and collaboration features that VectorWorks Fundamentals doesn't, it's the ideal solution for multi-disciplinary firms and designers who do it all.' A big plus is that it’s Mac compatible unlike the ‘amateur’ packages, such as Grand Designs 3D.

Plan3D

While you can hold and cherish the above software packages, Plan3D is an online resource that you subscribe to. The cost is $2.95 a month. System Requirements: Any laptop or PC with Windows XP, Vista or 2000, at least 256 MB memory and a 3D video card. The sales pitch argues: 'Use Plan3D to design your dream home from basement to roof - or just design one room at a time. Lofts, bathrooms, living rooms and other room interiors can be designed quickly and viewed from any angle. You can switch to blueprint view to see dimensions.'

Extras include 3D furniture like sofas, chairs, tables, kitchen cabinets, fixtures for your bathroom, trees, flowers and shrubs, and windows and doors galore. For the interior: carpet, bricks, fabrics, any colors, upholstery, leather, wallpaper, wood textures, and so on.

Google SketchUp 7

Those darn clever chaps at google have come up with Google SketchUp 7. An online resource, the basic model is free to use – there’s a Pro version you can pay for, priced $495. Take a look. You may well find SketchUp 7 suits your needs – at least as a starting point.

  1. As a daily AutoCAD user I feel I must point out a mistake in your article. AutoCAD LT has no 3D capabilities. It's inadvisable to recommend this product to people looking for their "dream home building software", as they won't be able to model anything, but I guess they could use it to draw some floorplans. If the user wants to be able to model a 3D version of their house they would need "Full" AutoCAD not LT. Unfortunately it retails at double the price of LT, and the skills needed for modelling would be way too advanced for people without any experience. In fact, anybody who is already capable of modelling in AutoCAD would most likely have skipped the software and used something much better for the task like 3D Studio Max or Maya.
