Once you feel you have found someone who you understand and more importantly understands you, you will need to establish a chain of command for your project.

Ideally your project manager will aid any exchange of information on an hour to hour basis, but frequent coherent communication between yourself and your architect throughout the project is also a must.
Establish early on who - yourself, your partner or both - will have responsibility for any decisions about materials or changes to specification that might need to be made. Stick with this, even at times of pressure. Learn to say no and mean it.
