So much for the theory, let's see how some homeowners have gone about converting their basements.

Glass has been used to stunning effect to open out this basement and flood it with light, while providing a seamless link with the rest of the house. The London Basement Company virtually tripled the size of the existing cellar under this Edwardian terraced house, to create a fabulous contemporary kitchen with French doors leading out into the garden.

The second example is a TV/family/dining room which forms part of a basement conversion under a Victorian terraced house, carried out by The London Basement Company. As there was no existing cellar, the work involved excavating down from the front garden, then under the property.
There's also an office, utility room and shower room, making the basement flexible enough to be used as a bedroom should the family's needs change.

Formerly used as a bike store, a pokey cellar in a mid-terrace Victorian house has been transformed by Basement 4 into this spacious kitchen/dining room. To make the space flow, a load-bearing wall and two supporting timbers were replaced with less obtrusive structural steel beams.
Although there isn't much natural daylight, it feels bright and spacious thanks to an all-white decor and state-of-the-art lighting system, including LED lights in the staircase.
