3 Plan For Natural Daylight

Think about how you’re going to get natural light into the space as well. Are you going to put in Velux rooflights? Or a dormer window? Dormer windows are lovely, because they give you extra headroom.

4 What Will The Space Be For?

Think about whether you want a shower room, a toilet or en suite in there. What’s the room being used for? Is it a studio? Is it a bedroom? Any additional space is going to add value anyway, whether you call it ‘bedroom number four’ or ‘study space’.

Loft window in a bedroom

There’s no point in putting a bathroom there if you’re not going to use it, but think about how you’ll use the room in the future, too - if you’ll have more kids, if you want to maximise its value, then putting an extra shower room is great – it’s an en suite bedroom, in effect. But you have got to get the services up there, which is really tricky for lofts.

A word of warning, though: never let your builder put a macerator (a waste disposal unit with a pump) in. Macerators should be banned. Even talking about them makes me feel ill.

  1. I remember seeing or reading that you can insulate a roof space with what was called a space blanket. nailed to the joists and will give the same insulation as 6inch or more quilt.Have you any details of this and is it a good way to insulate a loft space that is floored over.

  2. Hi. I'm really after some advice. I have a bungalow which I would dearly love to extend and the best way would appear to be up. However, we live in a conservation area and have been told that we cannot build above the current roof level and the pitch is extremely shallow (when in the loft I can only stand straight near the apex and I'm only 5'3"!). Most roof conversion companies deal only with steeper pitches or increase the roof height. Having watched your show, I've seen the innovative ideas you've come up with to difficult problems. I'm sure you will have come across this before, I'm certain we're not unique, and would love some advice to accommodate my ever growing family and maintain my sanity.

  4. Hi George, We love your show!! My husband is currently serving with the Royal Air Force overseas in Cyprus. We are home owners and will be returning to the U.K in Dec 2011; our home is currently being rented out. We only had 8 weeks living in our house prior before leaving for Cyprus, and I felt most sickened of the idea of renting the property out to somebody else, so much so that I wanted to keep the house empty until our return home!!! (Much to my husbands dismay!) Our house is full of potential but I do not know where or how to start! We are a family of four, and though the house is big enough, I feel that the spare space we have does not contribute to our lifestyle at all. My husband wants to sell up and and move straight into a new home, with no character at all (that`s my view!!!), but I really love the house we are in. Yes we need to bring the house up to date, and that is why I need your assistance. With your talent and fresh, innovative ideas,I just know that you can transform our house and put to rest what is proving to be our most dificult situation, and that is to Sell or Stay? Please help me stay!!!!! Please consider us for your next series? Pauline & Gareth

  6. I paid an architect last year to make drawings for a loft conversion. I paid a deposit and the remaining money when he delivered the drawings. He said you can go ahead and start the work as it is lawful what he had put in the drawings.the money paid included application to the council for planning permission. one year later I did not have the loft converted and still waiting for planning permission.I rang council and they said it was unlawful what architect did and also I am in a conservation area. How do I get my money back?the architect should have known this before he made me pay for drawings.

  7. Your show this week has filled me with inspiration. My mother-in-law passed away recently and my daughters want me to move into her house. I feel I can only do this if I radically change it inside and make it mine. Your idea for the loft space was just brilliant and now I just need to find someone who could do it for me! Keep up the good work...you are refreshingly different from other make over programmes. Thank you

  9. Great programme, George. A real change from get-rich-quick makeover shows. You made a big point at the start about wanting to replace the PVC windows with more environmentally friendly wood, but I think the budget issues prevented this. Can wood really be as robust, secure, maintenance-free, and as economical as PVC, especially for larger bay windows from Georgian through to 1950s properties? It would be great to see your expert advice on this. Hope the rest of the series is as good as the first show.

  10. I thoroughly enjoyed the programme last night. What a nice guy. It makes a change to have a genuine person who cares about people. He is really passionate about his voacation. he had some brilliant idea's. Obviously from his training but there has to be some common sense there as well. Loved the accent too. He can come and do my loft extension if he wants to. Sheila.

  11. Re: The Home Show, Wednesday 5th November. I could not believe you knocked the WC and Bathroom into one. Five people in the house and only one WC, and that in the BATHROOM! Some hopes of ever taking a bath or shower uninterrupted. Grampa.
