According to a new report, 80 per cent of us admit that the credit crunch has made us look for new ways to make our money go further - and we're turning to arts, crafts and DIY-style activities to make it happen. One in four of us are trying out self-sufficiency by planting a kitchen garden in window boxes and back gardens; 17 million of us are getting into DIY to save money on home improvements; 16 per cent of us are designing and creating greeting cards and gifts; a tenth of us admit to dusting off the sewing kits to save money on clothing and soft furnishings, and there's even been a noticeable return to outdated hobbies such as stamp collecting, motorbike restoration, and knitting. What next, getting friendly with neighbours and being polite to strangers?
