Build Local - Buy Local

Sourcing locally will cut down on emissions involved in transporting building materials from farther afield. Consider using locally grown timber rather than Scandinavia's finest.

Insulation

Insulate, insulate, insulate, and then put in double glazing if you can afford it. If you can't, draft-proofing your existing windows will help keep the heat on the inside and the chill January mornings on the outside.

Sunshine

Getting your electricity from solar panels might not be practical, but consider a hot water system, which is very simple, costs only £2-3000 to install, and will reduce your carbon emissions significantly.
