Not a lot of people know this, but building houses produces more than a quarter of the UK's carbon dioxide. We look at the practical ways that you construct your dream home without damaging the planet so much.

The first thing to bear in mind is that building green means building smart. The orientation of your house is important, with east-facing windows catching the morning sun and heating your house, whilst a solid back prevents overheating during the hottest part of the day.
If you've got lots of glazing, consider planting deciduous trees. In summer they provide shade, in winter they'll shield you from the cold winds and let light into an otherwise dark house.

The materials you use are also important, and it's a good idea to get them doing more than one thing. Clay walls negate the need for painting as the plaster has its own colour.
For flooring, polished concrete screed is a great method, as normally you'd have to add a stone floor, carpet or timber to a regular concrete screed finish.
