Tiles last forever but grout can become stained or chipped in no time. Raking out between the tiles and re-grouting will make your shower or bathroom look like new.

Time required:
20 minutes for a small splashback, half day for a shower enclosure

Cost:
£3-5 for a handheld grout remover; a 1 litre tub of ready-mix grout costs less than £5; a tile grout squeegee costs around £1.50

Skill level:
Easy - you just need to persevere with this boring but worthwhile job!

You'll need:
Grout removing tool, old paintbrush; sponge; grouting squeegee

Get Started...

Step One:

Try using a strong bleach solution on the grout before resorting to raking out the grout. It may be enough to rejuvenate the surface. If not, put in the bath/basin plug and protect the sanitary ware with an old cloth or blanket. Don’t let bits of grout get into the waste pipe and cause a blockage.
