Making a really good job of papering or painting a room often means taking a radiator off the wall - but only tackle this level of plumbing work if you’re confident of your ability.

Time required:
About 20 minutes per radiator

Cost:
Free

Skill level:
Advanced

You'll need:
Radiator key; two adjustable wrenches; old sheets and towels; screwdriver; PTFE tape; bucket or bowl

Step One

Turn off your central heating and allow the water to cool down.

Step Two

Place old sheets and towels beneath the valves at each end of the radiator. Next, turn the on/off or control valve to the ‘off’ position. For a thermostatic valve, switch to the fully ‘off’ and not just the frost setting (small snowflake symbol).

  1. I need help! We are renovating a house built in 1927. We are replacing the old heating system (steam boiler) with a gas pack. I want to remove the old radiators. How do I go about this? The house has sat empty for 3 years so I assume there will be no water in the boiler or pipes. The boiler and pipes do have asbestos wrapping around them that is in good shape and we will have them encapsulated. Do I need to plug up holes running from the basement to the radiators to keep any debris from entering the living space? Any help or advice will be appreciated. Thanks.
