Plastering needs practice and a good technique for perfect results but it’s possible to tackle smaller areas with good results. Leave ceilings to the professionals. Here’s how to add a plaster skim coat to a new plasterboard wall.

Time required:
It's a weekend project - don't try to do this job in a hurry

Cost:
Hawk and trowel sets from about £20; a 25kg bag of plaster costs around £6

Skill level:
Advanced - you really need practice to get a good finish, but you've got to start somewhere...

You'll need:
Plastering trowel; hawk; bucket; larger mixing bucket; paddle accessory and power drill; paintbrush; multi-finish plaster
