Any gas-fired boilers installed now and oil-fired burners installed after April 2007, should be high-efficiency condensing boilers. This applies to both replacements and new installations, unless they prove to be too difficult to fit in your home. If this is the case, as it is for some older properties, a non-condensing boiler will have to be installed. A registered installer will be able to advise you on which boiler is most suitable.
Why the swap to condensing boilers?
The change has come about because they:
* Produce less carbon dioxide than ordinary boilers.
* Reduce the amount of heat loss through the flue.
* Convert 86% or more of the fuel they use into useful heat (ordinary boilers can convert as little as 60%).
* Should save you money on your bills in the long run, although they do cost between £100 and £300 more than conventional modern boilers to buy.
* Are generally smaller than conventional boilers - so they're less tricky to install.
This sitting room combines warm-air heating with a traditional log-burning fire. Warm-air heating is a viable option, providing instant heat and the ability to be positioned flush with the ceiling, wall or floor.
For more information on high-efficiency condensing boilers and how to buy them, visit the Energy Saving Trust website: www.est.org.uk. In all cases, your boiler must be fitted by someone with the appropriate qualifications. To find a CORGI-registered gas boiler installer in your area, go to www.corgi-gas-safety.com. To find an OFTEC registered oil-fired boiler installer go to www.corgi-gas-safety.com. Remember that it's no good having the world's most efficient boiler if you don't take measures against heat loss elsewhere in your home. Proper insulation for lofts, walls and windows is vital.
