Replacing a switch with a dimmer is a quick way of instantly changing the atmosphere of a room - a must if you want to make the most of the architecture in your home.
You can tackle this work yourself as long as you’re confident of your ability. If in doubt, call in a certified electrician. Remember, you must not replace a pull cord switch in a bathroom with a wall-mounted light switch; never fit a dimmer to control a fluorescent light, and bear in mind that some low energy lighting units can’t be used with a dimmer switch but newer models are compatible – check before fitting.
Time required:
30 minutes
Cost:
Dimmer switches start from as little as £4
Skill level:
Don't tackle anything electrical unless you are confident about what you're doing. However, this job is fairly simple
You'll need:
Dimmer switch; electrical screwdrivers; pliers

Switch off the circuit that controls the switch and take out the fuse from your consumer unit. Double check the switch isn’t working and put a sign next to the consumer unit warning that you are working on a circuit.
