George Clarke's guide to erecting a fence.

Time required:
Depends on size of garden but allow at least a day for fitting the posts

Cost:
From about £25 for a 6 x 6ft panel

Skill level:
Low

You'll need:
Spirit level; drill/driver; gloves; string and pegs; sledge hammer (for metal spikes); spade; spirit level; tape measure; saw; hammer; spanner

Overview: Fences are still the most popular method of defining a garden boundary. They are cheaper than stone or brick and easy and quick to erect with only a few tools. The type you choose can depend on the amount you want to pay and what you want from the fence. Does it need to improve security and/or privacy or is it going to be more of a decorative feature or space for climbing plants to grow? Before you start, trim any overhanging tree branches or shrubs along the path of the new fence. Then, stretch a string line between two pegs to use as a guide for fixing the posts in a straight line. If you're using concrete, see How To Set Fence Posts In Concrete.

  1. Hi. I've just seen tonight's programme and George spoke of insulation material that was thin but efficient. I can't find the details on the supplier list and wondered what it was.

  2. Hi Anna This should be fairly straightforward, assuming your wall is even, level and sound (and that it has foundations so that the extra weight of the fence won't cause it to rock in high winds. Assuming all that's the case, you're best bet is to get along to your local builders' merchants to buy the correct fixings - there will be strong brackets that will sit at the bottom of the fence posts to hold them to the wall. Then, it's just a case of following the instructions above for fixing the panels and crossbars in place.
