If you want to add thermostatic valves or carry out some major DIY work, you will need to drain your central heating system. The method given in this step by step guide can be used if you have an open vented system.
Newer systems, for example if you have a combi boiler, are known as sealed systems and rely on mains water pressure. In these cases, call in a qualified plumber to carry out the work. If you have very old radiators, consider asking a qualified plumber to flush the system. Cleaning out the sludge will increase the efficiency of the boiler.

You'll need:
Adjustable wrench; timber batten and string; hosepipe; radiator key

Turn off the gas or electricity supply to the boiler. Go into your loft and find the expansion tank for the system. This will have a ball valve that controls the flow of water from the mains into the system. Lift up the ball valve arm and tie it to a timber batten placed across the tank. This will stop the system re-filling.
