Climbing frames, swing sets and similar large pieces are built to be outside all year round and should need little more than a splash over with some warm soapy water and a rinse. Add some Milton or other sterilising fluid to the water for extra reassurance if you have young children. Check for any bolts and screws that have worked loose and tighten them all up firmly – give any stiff connections a squirt of WD40 to eliminate rust and lubricate everything nicely. Any metal should be aluminium, which is rust-free, or treated to prevent rust, but if you do find any rust patches, you need to stop it spreading. Sand back the rust using wire wool or sandpaper, then seal the area with a metal primer designed for use outdoors.
Inflatable paddling pools left in the shed over winter usually acquire an attractive layer of scurf and spiders, but shouldn’t need more than a rinse over to restore them to their former glory. Try adding a couple of capfuls of white distilled vinegar to the water to shift stains and mildew, and kill off germs. Plastic toys that have been exposed to the damp often get quite mouldy, so spruce them up by soaking them in a solution of four tablespoons of baking soda and one litre of water.
Indoors or out, we want them...
