Surround sound systems have dramatically improved our enjoyment of TV and films in the home. If you want the cinema experience in the comfort of your own living room, here's what you need to know.

What Is Surround Sound?

Surround sound was created for commercial cinemas to give the audience a better feeling of really being in the film. Dialogue is firmly locked to the characters on screen and ambient sound effects come from all around - just like real life.

The technology soon moved to home cinema systems that require speakers positioned around the room and a subwoofer for deep bass effects. With a surround sound system you can enjoy a real cinema-like experience from DVDs and many TV programmes at home.

  • Subwoofer A loudspeaker specifically designed for deep bass effects.
  • Virtual Dolby Creates surround sound from just two speakers.
