From natural carpets in muted tones to brightly-coloured rubber and linoleum, the choice of flooring currently available is nothing less than inspirational.

However, choosing a floor isn't just about ripping up the shagpile and laying down something a little more now. There are a number of factors to consider, such as environmental and health issues, practicality and cost. Add to this the desire to have a style statement underfoot and you may find yourself scratching your head and wondering how to narrow your search.
As environmental issues become more prominent, the flooring industry is having to deal with heightened interest in the manufacturing process, sustainability and health. Laws are being introduced to protect the depletion of forests, and to phase out the use of certain substances in the manufacture of carpets and PVC.

The increase in cases of asthma and eczema are also a concern. Britain has 3.4 million people with asthma, higher than any other country in Europe. We also have significantly more fitted carpet, and the dustmites that inhabit them are thought to trigger the rise in allergies.
So, how do you go about choosing a floor that fits on every level? We've rounded up six options that really work for the future.
