Designer Radiator. Guide To Designer Radiators.

Building your own home gives you the chance to integrate all the fixtures and fittings, but the humble radiator is one of the few items always on display. Why settle for safe and efficient when there are so many fantastic designs available for every room? We're put together our pick of the best but first...

The Practical Stuff

Whatever style or price you want to pay, if a radiator doesn't fit the room you're intending to use it in it'll be nothing more than an ornament. Make sure you check the size and heat output for each room - you can do this using a heat loss calculator such as www.radcalcs.com, or ask your supplier to work this out for you.

Urban radiator

Dull white panels are fast becoming a thing of the past, with both soft rounded and modern angular designs becoming increasingly popular. Reclaimed and original cast iron designs will always be in demand but be careful what you buy, especially from reclamation yards, as around one in 10 will have cracks, making them unsuitable to use. Take the risk out of it and speak to a professional restorer.

Heating engineers agree that the best location for a radiator is in the coldest part of the room. Under a window is recommended as this allows the colder air coming in via the window to be warmed up.

  1. Why can't a cast iron radiator be a designer radiator? Just because something is not 21st century looking doesn't make it non designer. I do agree though that the cast iron radiator listed here would look out of place in a modern home but just because it isn't modern looking doesn't mean it shouldn't be shown on these pages.

  2. I'm surprised they include cast-iron radiators in an article about designer radiators. Cast iron radiators have a wonderful solidity to them and can be the focal point in a period property, but I wouldn't dream of having them near a chic, modern property. The real benefit of modern designer radiators I've found is the vertical radiators - tall slim radiators which provide the same heat output, but don't take up so much of the room's "footprint".

  3. I agree, nowadays you can find everything form Victorian style radiators to contemporary designed ones, You don't have to hide it away, like people used to do, I believe that if you choose a well designed radiator it could raise your home value when selling your property

  4. After having a quick look through the pages here it has some good general information, but nothing specific or in detail. This isn't the site for that I guess but it would be nice if it was their.
