The E Coli bacteria is just one of about 500 species that inhabit the guts of mammals, but it is one of the most common with the maximum number of individual bacteria that a human excretes in one day up to an incredible 10 trillion. The bacterium is linked to a number of dangerous infections including meningitis, peritonitis, septicemia and pneumonia, as well as being responsible for the odour of faeces!
Despite this fearsome reputation E Coli is generally helpful to humans, enabling us to stay healthy and providing the body with Vitamin K.
Simple cleaning routines can massively reduce the chances of an unpleasant infection. Regular hand washing with antibacterial soap or washing up liquids with an anti-bacterial agent will keep the bacteria at bay. Always wipe down your kitchen surfaces with a clean cloth soaked in hot, soapy water with a dash of bleach to keep them clean and bacteria-free.
