The House Dust Mite is one of the most common causes of allergic symptoms and asthma. To be precise it is actually their droppings rather than the mites themselves that are the source of the allergens which can cause hay fever, conjunctivitis and dermatitis as well as asthma. The mites will prosper in warm, dark and damp conditions.
Changes to the way we live over the past few decades have provided ideal breeding conditions. Double glazing, increased humidity from cooking and reduced ventilation all help create the perfect environment for dust mites.
Despite this, you can take some simple steps to reduce the effects of the dust mites. Steam cleaning of carpets, curtains and soft furnishing covers will kill large numbers of the mites whilst dehumidifiers will also keep the damp out of the air in smaller rooms.
