Feeding wild birds can be a fascinating and rewarding experience. It can also make a vital difference to the survival of some of our favourite garden visitors. Many of our wild birds have lost essential areas of natural habitat as the countryside undergoes change.
Why You Should Welcome Wild Birds
Wild birds increasingly rely on parks and gardens for food, shelter and nesting sites. You can encourage many different species of bird to visit your garden with just a bit of thought, some simple bird feeders and a regular supply of correct, good quality food. Even a small back yard could support a variety of wild birds if food and water are supplied on a daily basis.
Recent surveys show that many previously common garden birds, are rapidly declining in numbers, as nesting sites are lost and food sources dwindle. A very small garden may have ten - twenty different species dropping in over the course of a year. An average sized garden on the outskirts of a town could have as many as 30 different species.
