Kirstie says: 'Nearly all designers provide free samples of fabrics or wallpapers for you to take home. That way, you can avoid expensive mistakes and learn to live with the design before you buy.'
Put the fabric or wallpaper swatch in the room that it's intended for and see how it looks in that room's light and amongst existing furnishings - it's even worth taping a wallpaper swatch to a wall and living with it for a week or so.
