Go Geometric

No doubt inspired by our continuing love affair with the 1970s, geometric prints are still big must-haves, whether on wallpaper or cushions. These cushions are our favourite pick - they look more high end than high street, but then what else would you expect from Betty Jackson?
From front: Drift cushion £25; silk mini ovals cushion £25; embroidered cushion, £28; silk large Ovals cushion £30, all Betty Jackson at Debenhams.

Cath Kidston
Bright Sparks

Primary colours hit the catwalk big time in 2007, so there's no surprise that they've filtered through to homewares this year. Cath Kidston has been specialising in punchy cookware for quite some time, and the retro styling of her pieces is both hot hot hot and enduring. Buy just a few pieces and a plain kitchen will be quite simply perky.
Set of four mixed mini barrel bowls, £18; mixing bowls, £18 each (also in pink and red); jugs, £15 each, all Cath Kidston.

John Lewis
Taste Of Tribal

Warning: this is not a theme to overdo. So, tribal prints are big on the catwalk and for interiors, but there is such as thing as too much of it. If you're looking for subtle, though, here's how to do it. This beautifully curvaceous Congo chair is made from dark-stained rattan (who knew rattan could look so good?!) and would look stunning against plain white walls in a contemporary interior. Palm tree and typewriter optional.
Library coffee storage table, £175; Teardrop floor lamp, £80; Congo chair with cream seat pad, £250; Banana Stripe cushion, £25; Rustic hurricane lamp, £29, all John Lewis.

Shimmer Metallics

Metallics - bronzes, muted golds, silver - are big news this year, and make a quick hit of glamour in an otherwise plain scheme, or give a retro-inspired room a push right over the top. Nothing will show off your blooms like these metallic vases, and if you can't be bothered with the flowers, they look just as good without...
Silver onion vase, £15; frosted oval cylinder vase, £19.50; frosted oval candle, £5; frosted oval ball, £3.50, all Marks & Spencer.
