If the last time you had anything to do with wallpaper you were downloading it to your desktop, you're in for a big surprise. Paint is losing its appeal and wallpaper is back in a big way.
If granny prints of the 1970s and 1980s were right up your street, you'll find them aplenty in the DIY store. But if you're looking for something more dramatic, seek out dazzling designer ranges to give your room a face-lift. Currently on top of the fashionistas' shopping lists are trompe l'oeil wallpapers, for that magic eye effect.

Anyone who lived through the 1970s will be pleased to learn that wallpaper's return to vogue steered clear of nasty red and gold flock as favoured by curry houses.
In fact, the most avant-garde of new wallpapers (or 'wallcoverings' as they're now called), are designed to look as unlike wallpaper as possible.
Tracy Kendall leads the field in trompe l'oeil wall hangings. Designed to be pasted in single strips or blocks rather than applied to whole walls or rooms, they create a magic eye effect of a stack of magazines, a book shelf or even a window frame.
Other designs to check out include the kitchen range of giant knives, forks and plates, and 3D bedroom papers using sequins, feathers and other glittery paraphernalia.

A quick fix solution to drab decor comes courtesy of Mathmos' new Surreal Wallpaper: a projector with changeable graphic packs from various cool designers including Timorous Beasties. At the flick of a switch you get a wall of projected pattern, about three feet in diameter: the perfect antidote to paper and paste, ideal for anyone who bores easily, and the interior design solution for renters.
