You can use a loyalty card to collect points on everything you buy – then redeem these against future purchases. However, there are more to loyalty cards than immediately meet the eye…

There are probably few people in the country who haven’t got a Tesco, Boots or Nectar card by now. Those that have, will know that shoppers receive regular money-off vouchers, as well as the ability to build points to be used to get money off everything from train tickets to loaves of bread or make up.
Those that haven’t might not know that the vouchers of some loyalty schemes needn’t just be redeemed in store against, say, food – they can be made to go much, much further by being spent on special deals. Tesco’s, for instance, can be worth up to four times as much if used in this way. What’s more, cards can be used to make savings against days out, magazine subscriptions and restaurants, too.
So, which is the most generous scheme? Boots Advantage card currently tops the list - shoppers earn four points, worth 4p, for every pound spent in a store or on the website (on everything but stamps or prescriptions). Sign up to Boots Health Club, and you’ll also get discount and double points vouchers on a regular basis. Look out, too, for double or treble point days, where customers with loyalty cards get points that equate to up to a 12 per cent discount on what they buy.
Nectar cards, like Tesco’s Clubcard, can be used to earn points when spending not just in Sainsbury’s, but at BP petrol stations, Dollond & Aitchinson and other stores, too. You can even earn extra points by taking part in online surveys, too, and can go online to benefit from treats, days out and purchases.
Not sure if your favourite shops offer loyalty cards? It’s always worth asking – and it needn’t be just for food, either. Morrisons offers a loyalty card scheme, but so does Waterstone’s, for example – and even some hairdressers? Not sure if they do? Ask them. They say they don’t and they’re a locally run store? Suggest it…
