1. French Interior Design: Get The Look
1. French Interior Design: Get The Look (Image 1 of 33)
With the palace of Versailles as their benchmark, French homes have a lot to live up to. The excesses of the monarchy may be long gone, but our chic, Parisian neighbours still like a bit of bling to go with their beautifully elegant cherry wood furniture and silk curtains. That’s not to say they can’t be swayed by the charms of country furniture or an ultra-modern Philippe Starck chair.
French furniture has a marvellous tradition to draw on, including the ornate styles of the Louis periods, the Directoire designs that followed the French revolution, and the Louis-Philippe style of 1830-1848, to name just a few. Find plenty of repro examples at Grange.
The French designer we can all name is the prolific Philippe Starck, whose innovative ideas result in chairs, bathroom fittings and much more, all with a unique flavour. Other designers that deserve a mention are Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, whose work can be found at Chaplins, Sacha Lakic and Cedric Ragot at Roche Bobois and Didier Gomez, Pierre Paulin, and Pascal Mourgue at Ligne Roset.
