While we were dozing in our frumpy stuffed armchairs, the Danes were building the design heaven of the future. In their capable hands, shiny chrome and honest Scandinavian wood were put to the test, while space-age plastics were extruded and moulded to within an inch of their lives. Lots of designs from the 1950s onwards are still made today, as fresh as if they’d popped straight out of a designer’s iMac. The big guns are Arne Jacobsen, Verner Panton, Poul Henningsen, Hans J Wegner, Poul Kjaerholm and Erik Jorgensen; check out their potted biographies at http://www.chaplins.com and http:/www.skandium.com.
To kit out your home in Danish style, look out for Georg Jensen’s fabulous silverware, Bang & Olufsen’s sound and media and Bodum’s chic tableware, not forgetting Louis Poulsen lighting, Holmegard glass, plus pricey but oh so worth it Royal Copenhagen china. For a Scandi shopping experience, Skandium http://www.skandium.com is the place to go, and to bag an heirloom of the future, take a trip to Danish Crafts http://www.danishcrafts.org.
