1. Buyer's Guide To Food Mixers (Image 1 of 6)
Whether it’s Jamie, Gordon, Nigella or Hugh, it seems like you can’t lift your head out of a bag of tortilla chips these days without someone berating you for buying processed food and not knowing the correct way to gut pigs. Of course you can barely find the time to fill a trolley with frozen waffles let alone bake your own bread, which is where these lovely food mixers come in. Designed to take the arm ache out of beating, whipping, mixing, kneading etc, they can save you time and make you that domestic goddess, as well as give your kitchen a bit of bling. Here are five to look out for.

Busting The Jargon
Attachments Most stand mixers will come with a cake beater and a dough hook, but you may also get a whisk, food chopper or even a blender thrown in. Machines like the Kitchenaid and Kenwood have a huge range of added attachments you can buy, such as citrus press, pasta roller, juicer or spice mill.
Weight The larger machines are definitely for keeping out on the worktop – they can weigh up to 12kg, so you won’t want to lift them too often. If you can’t dedicate a spot on the worktop, check out some of the smaller (lighter) versions.
Quality You’re not just paying for beautiousness on the higher-end mixers – generally speaking, the pricier models have solid metal construction, powerful and durable motors, a stable, easy planetary mixing action for the best cake mixes and batters and plenty of flexibility. Cheaper models will do a good job for the occasional baker, but serious cooks will get their money’s worth paying a bit extra.
