Spin speed The faster the spin, the dryer the garment, and the less tumble drying it will need.

Energy efficiency Tumble drying is the bad boy of the energy efficiency world, so ease your conscience a little by buying a washer dryer with a good energy rating.

Programmes Extra programmes, such as antibacterial wash or denim, are handy for caring for your precious fabrics, but are only a benefit if you need them.

Capacity Most washer dryers offer 5kg dry laundry weight for wash programmes and half that for a drying load, meaning you have to half empty the machine before setting it to tumble mode. If you wash and dry a lot, look out for models with greater capacity.

Thanks for the pointer about buying a washer dryer only if one has to. Our last hotpoint was a washer dryer and it lasted just over two years before breaking down. In the 2 years we had it we never used the dryer function so after reading this guide we have bought a washing machine and this time I hope it lasts a bit longer.

I think LG make some great washer dryers - the WM3431HW looks just great with packed features including 19 hour delay wash. One of the only problems with these combos is the energy consumption - buying a a washer and dryer separately saves a huge amount of energy. One interesting thing i found out about the Kenmore Elite Oasis washer is that if you use it for ten years washing 12 loads a week, the money you will have saved on energy is enough to pay for the machine !!!!!!
