Far from being stuck in a 1970s time warp, sideboards are one of the must-have buys for interior aficionados. We've found the sleekest new designs, and Naomi Cleaver presents her top tips to choosing one that's right for you.

Measure up before you go shopping, and it's not just length you have to worry about. You don't want a sideboard that's too deep and causes an obstruction, and if there's shelving above the area you have in mind, leave plenty of room underneath.
If your sideboard is going to double up as a serving surface, make sure that it's heat resistant, or at least get some protective mats, a trivet or even a glass top.
A sideboard can be a great show piece, especially if you commission a piece from a furniture designer. It needn't be more expensive than buying off the shelf at midmarket level and it will suit your exact requirements. If you want to go down the bespoke route, try one of Sarah Kay's fab designs (www.kay-stemmer.com).
Sideboards with doors and drawers will look nice and neat, but if you want to show off your best crockery, you should go for one with open shelves or a glass front.
