Butterfly House is a refurbished family home, inspired by the lifecycle of the butterfly. Designed and owned by architect Laurie Chetwood, it is an experiment in zoomorphic design and traces each change from the larval stage, represented by the walkway, to the chrysalis, captured by the staircase and conservatory and finally the winged canopies - the butterfly itself.
The design process took two years to evolve and over three years to complete - being such a one-off, many of the features had to be proto-typed, and continuously tweaked and tested. Managing this experiment, while running a 100 person architectural practice, has been Laurie's biggest challenge.
Is this house really lived in? Absolutely. Laurie says his young children have grown up with the house and are used to its idiosyncracies! The final result is an invigorating and dramatic experience of colour and texture - an experiment in architectural sculpture that is also a stimulating family home.
