One of the first people to champion the work of artist Jamie Hewlett, London gallerist Steve Lazarides has an uncanny knack of spotting talent just before they become famous. We asked him for his top five artists of the moment (2006):
For information on Steve’s gallery, go to www.lazinc.com.
'Street techniques' (graffiti, in other words) meets fine art in the work of Cork-based artist, Conor Harrington. Prices start at £5,000 (pictured).
Antony Micallef’s work has been described as 'Caravaggio meets Manga'. Prices start at £5,000.
New York art collective Faile are dubbed ‘the nice guys of the graffiti world’, because they spray on fly posters rather than ruining the city's walls. From £300.
Edinburgh-based Polly Morgan has single-handedly made taxidermy fashionable. Prices start at £7,000.
Guerilla artist Banksy’s pretty well known already, and his work is highly collectible. Prices start at £950 for a silk screen print, or £70 for a limited-edition print from www.picturesonwalls.com.
The best thing about buying art from one of the many graduate art shows is that it won't be expensive, and you'll end up buying something you really like, as opposed to an artwork that you think could be worth something in years to come. Two of the best, and the biggest, are New Designers (www.newdesigners.com) and Free Range (www.free-range.org.uk).
