Libraries and other public spaces are a good place to see and acquire work by local artists. Very often the local arts council will group together working artists living in the area and put on a joint exhibition. The quality will be variable, and the pricing erratic but attractive pieces at affordable prices can be found.

Art fairs and exhibitions
Many of the countries most prestigious private galleries will show works at one of the major art fairs in the Capital. But smaller fairs are beginning to gain popularity across the country. Find out where they are at www.britisharts.co.uk
Reproductions and decorative art can also be viewed and bought at events like the Ideal Home Show and Grand Designs Live
Most reputable private galleries have websites, which will at least provide an introduction to the work of a particular artist. As Olivia Connelly of the O Contemporary gallery in Brighton says: 'People can worry that they don't have enough knowledge about art and may embarrass themselves, when the reality is that everyone is qualified to buy art - all they need to know is what they like.'
The good galleries are usually very helpful to novice buyers and may even give a discount if asked.
Alistair Hicks of Purdy Hicks Gallery in London SE1 says: 'If you are buying on a budget either be very bold or very safe. The safe approach is to buy limited edition prints by serious artists. There are several good dealers in the field and also regular auctions, but do be careful on condition and editions. The bold approach is to go for original works but avoid the trendy favourites of the marketplace. There are thousands of good artists of all ages working in Britain.'
