If you're looking for something particular, you can take a more scientific approach.
To find your nearest reclamation yard, visit www.salvoweb.com where you can search for yards in your county. Alternatively, if you’re happy to travel further afield you can search for a specific item you want to buy.
You may be concerned about the origin of what you’re buying when you’re shopping for your home at a reclamation yard.
There is a voluntary code for dealers of architectural antiques and reclaimed building materials. The Salvo code
aims to create confidence that the pieces you’re buying aren’t stolen, haven’t been removed from protected historic buildings without permission, and are free of toxic chemicals except those natural to the material, traditional to its historical use, or caused by pollution. You can see the list of around 150 dealers on the current list.
Just because dealers haven’t signed up doesn’t mean they don’t abide by these procedures, though. If the yard you’re visiting hasn’t signed up, ask how it operates and if you don’t feel happy with the answers, move on.
Shopping at a salvage or reclamation yard is covered by normal consumer protection laws. However, as with other secondhand buys, you should not expect your purchases to be of perfect quality, and should have lower expectations of their performance.
You’ll also need to take into account the price you paid if something does go wrong. If you were made aware of faults when you bought something, you cannot then take it back because of these faults. It’s also a good idea to check that the piece is suitable for the way in which you want to use it for before you purchase it.
