Cheaper than wallpaper - and more fun, too - stencilling lets you create your own designs for an individual look. If you're struggling to stencil, this step by step guide will set you straight.

Time required:
An afternoon

Cost:
Depends on paint and stencil. This one is GMT36, £16.95, from The Stencil Library. Plus you will need stencil mount and paint.

Skill level:
Just a little patience and care required

You'll need:
Water-based acrylic paint in white and a colour, standard paint roller and tray, small paint roller, metal measuring tape, soft pencil, spirit level, stencil, stencil mount or low tack masking tape.

  1. It's really easy to make your own stencil, just cut out some sturdy foam into the shape you want and then glue it to a wooden block. You can then paint it and use it to create patterns on your walls and furniture.
