Fill the pot with compost, allowing for your plant’s root ball. Your aim is to end up with your plant around 3cm below the rim of the pot, but read the instructions on the plant's label first, because some plants will prefer to be planted deeper or shallower.
Gently remove your plant from the pot you bought it in. Tease out the roots if they are tightly compacted. Put the plant into the container. Check you’re happy with its position.
Fill and firm the compost around it. If you’re adding other plants, arrange them first to check you’re happy with the final effect, then plant them so they’re at the same level as your first plant.

Add a decorative mulch of pebbles, gravel or bark to the top of the pot. This will help stop the weeds taking advantage of your new compost and prevent evaporation. Water well.
