Back from the garden centre with your haul? Here’s how to make your new plants at home in pots and containers. If you're not sure what to pot up, ask the garden centre staff for advice - they'll tell you what won't outgrow or how to combine plants for a beautiful colour display. Or, be inspired by Jamie Oliver, and grow your own herb garden in a pot.
One pot should only take a few minutes, but the more the merrier.
From around £10 for a decent-sized bag of compost and decorative mulch; pretty pots can cost from as little as £1 upwards, depending on their size and finish.
Basic.
One plant, or a selection of plants; a container with a drainage hole; crocks (broken bits of pottery); garden trowel; potting compost; decorative mulch; a pot or pots.

Cover the base of the pot with crocks (pieces of old pots, large stones or chunks of polystyrene from the containers some plants are sold in). Crocks will improve the drainage of your pot.
