If you'd like to know how to make the fabulously simple red envelope cushion that I make in episode one, follow the instructions below - they're so easy, even those of you not experienced in sewing will be able to make one in no time.

Skill level: If you've some experience of sewing machines, this is incredibly simple. However, for beginners, it's still not too challenging, because it's all about straight lines.

Cost: You don't need a sewing machine to do this, but you'll get a better result if you do. If you want to buy one, check our buyer's guide for recommendations and prices. The fabric I used was an offcut, but you could buy similar from a department store for around £10 per metre.

Time required: It took me around half an hour to make mine, but allow an hour if you're a first-timer.

You'll need: Fabric (see next page for instructions on working out how much your cushion will need); matching thread; pins and needles; button; sewing machine (optional).

  2. Hi It is most unusual with these sort of shows for there not to be a book. Is there going to be a book on Kirstie's Homemade Home would be most interested to buy it. Thank you with very kind regards Bea

  5. Kirstie and Channel 4 I have loved this series and the fact that I can catch up on the web on the episodes I missed. I have been a crafter all my life and tried all sorts, us forgotten crafters need more programmes like this. My house is also not the norm, made up from lots of 2nd hand/hand made goods and I already have a seaside/fishy themed bathroom! Kirstie you have inspired me to do some more crafts/sewing Thank you.

  10. Love the programme, look forward to each episode. Lets hope other programme makers latch onto the fact that there are a lot of crafters out there who have been neglected in the past. They say sales of sewing machines are rising all the time - there is surely an opportunity there somewhere. There are so many crafts out there to try they just need promoting as in this programme.

  13. I absolutely love this show! My mum has spent most of her working life and free time making soft furnishings and bought me a sewing machine at 21. I'm now in my 30s and sewing is my favourite crafty hobby, it seems to be a dying art among younger generations. I'm so pleased Kirsty is showing people that its not difficult and is so much cheaper than buying stuff! If you're a beginner, simplyfurnishings.com's free beginners guide is really useful. I hope more people give sewing a try.

  15. Oh where to start!! I'm soo glad to see that my enthusiasm for this show is shared, I just pray that they bring it out on DVD format because there is too much to remember! I am like alot of you wishing for the next episode as soon as the credits start to roll! I was inspired last week by, like alot of you, the flower arranging, such a simple idea but so effective. this week there's again just too much to remember! I'm deffinately going to look for some fabby wallpaper for my bathroom & I loved what Kirstie did with the embroidery-anglaise sheet as a roman blind-just genious! Candles in unused t-cups & pouring your fave Boots-smellies into beautiful glass bottles-fantastic ;) & as for Cardboard boxes under the homemade coffee table-love it! Enjoying this programme I think is easy partly because Kirstie is just so charming, sweet & very enthusiastic about all of the fantastic arts & trades out there, sadly some of them dwindling. She reminds you that it is ok to get excited about making your own cushions etc & buying a bargain that hasn't been bought in Ikea! I will now start to venture to reclimation yards & car boot sales in my spare time..All Hail Kirstie!

  17. I found the instructions a bit useless and printing them even worse! If you can print the comments, here are my own instructions that I used to make a cushion cover, took me all of 45 mins from start to finish, result! Start with the width of your cushion ie 18", then add 1" either side for the seam. For the length decide if you want the hem as a showpiece across the middle of the cushion or it you want it at the edge. For the middle use 2.5x the length of your cushion, for the edge, 3x the length. Add 2" to your final measurement to allow for a 1" hem at either end, then cut. With material right side down, fold your hems at each, pin and sew. Turn the material over, so wrong side is down, then fold your material one end over the other and pin the edges for a 1" seam. You will have 3 layers the same size for an edge finish, or if you want the 2.5x size, put the cushion at one end, fold the material over and mark with pin or chalk where the other hem sits. Remove the cushion then pin and sew. You can trim the seams afterwards if you want them smaller. Then turn to right side and stuff with your cushion pad, done! Hope this helps, the show is great, inspirational, can't wait for the next one!

  21. Sandy, I don't know whether Kirsty got her fabric and buttons there, but Truro Fabrics has a great selection of haberdashery including some fantastic large Dill buttons in all colours which are perfect for cushions.

  22. I LOVED this programme! I am moving with my boyfriend to London at the end of the summer so we can both start uni (at the grand old ages of 29 and 31!) and it will be the first time I have been able to make my mark on a place to call our own! Inspired by your cushions, I have already ordered some fabric for my re-covers and can't wait until it arrives! Thank so much for the inspiration - can't wait until this weeks episode!

  23. Kirsti, I enjoyed your series with Phil, and was sorry when it ended. I love your new series. My husband and I hardly ever bought new furniture. We made, or bought at auction. I'm a weaver and sewer.I made my clothes too. Now, I'm 78 and living alone. This house feels part of our family. We couldn't afford to furnish all at once. It grew with us organically. We didn't manage the pots or glasses, I was fascinated watching the process. I hope you manage to keep the high standard. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing well Best wishes. Ann

  24. What a great programme. My husband and I bought a cottage in France 3 years ago and have furnished it with all second hand furniture. My favourite place for china is the boot sale. I too collect blue and white china and this morning purchased a beautiful willow pattern teapot with a chip to the back of the lid and it was only 50p. I bought a big wash bowl and jug set in cream with pretty roses painted on it to stand on a unit in the bedroom and only paid ?5. I've bought curtains too at boot sales for never more than ?2 or ?3, one pair were Laura Ashley the other Sanderson. I love sewing and altered them to fit. One pair were far too long for my window, so with what was left over I made a pretty valence and a cushion cover. I buy my cottons, velcro and heading tape at my local market for less than half the price the shops charge. I thought the selotape idea for flower arranging was a great idea. This is the best programme on tv, I absolutely loved it and can't for this weeks. Kirstie is such a great presenter too. There was only one tiny fault and that was we would have preferred it without some of the music, as when she was explaining things it drowned her out. Thank you. ps The house she's doing up is lovely and we loved her parents house too.

  25. Thank you Kirstie this promises to be a wonderful series, its about time someone showed people how to make there own cushion covers etc. I hope that in a future programme you will be explaining about making your own curtains because it is so straight forward and with the price they are now in the shops well worth doing. Again many thanks.

  27. I thought the show was great. Normally i go for the same old boring creams and browns but after watching your show i will be going to second hand shops looking for stuff to make my house more unique to my style as i have always been concerned about what other people think of my house and never really had the guts to experiment with colours and mix designs but since i saw your show i want myu house to say alot about me. Thank You

  28. I thought the show was brilliant. Well done Kirstie at all the different crafts you tried and for publicising courses for skills such as glass blowing and pottery. I'd love to have a go. Well done with the cushion making. Keep at it. Lately I've been getting more and more crafty thinking back to skills my grandmother taught me (sewing etc) and I'm pleased someone else is having a go too. Crafting Em

  29. Thankyou for a great programme. I am 36 with a 3 and 1 1/2 yrd old and a house that needs to have our personal touch but I didn't know where to start. I buy the ideal/good/house&garden homes mags etc but they are so costly and to be honest just regurgiate the same old stuff. I enjoy Kirstie's style, she comes across as a very warm and genuine person and she is easy to watch. Today I have arranged flowers from the garden with the cellotape and this weekend I shall attempt a cushion!. Also I bought a tool kit endorsed by Kirstie and its fab. Keep up the good work and when is the book available?

  30. I really enjoyed the show ! It made me think about all the skills I learnt at school (sewing, knitting, crochet, pottery) and which I have forgotten over time. Still, I have a pile of fabrics here collected from Oxfam shops and a sister in law who I can beg for a sewing machine..time to get sewing I think ! Looking forward to the next episode...

  33. I really thought that sewing was dying out as a pastime, but Kirsty, you have re-started something we should never have allowed to die out. Finding a fabric shop is almost impossible these days, but Ebay offers great choice, and from my experience, great service - all the shops seems to have moved there. For me, sewing requires concentration and means I can't think about work or do houswork, so that's a bonus! it's a great pastime, and one I would heartily recommend. Kind regards, Jos Thomas
