Measure out the fabric. It should be three times the length of the cushion, by the width of the cushion plus add an extra 5cm on all sides for hemming. Then cut the fabric.
I think this would have been better as a video. It was a bit hard to follow for beginners. I was looking ofr instructions for my daughter and dont think its as easy to follow as others I have seen on the web.
I've been sewing for years and after reading these instructions would have to agree with others that they are not very good. If these were followed literally, there would be no opening left to insert the cushion pad! Interesting concept...
I LOVED "Homemade Home" it was so up my alley!I really enjoy making things, but homemade home has inspired me to try more and to look for courses and workshops. In another life I think Kirsty and I would be great friends (don't be scared!) Good job, well done and good luck with the next series. Sarah.
Hi would just like to say, the show is wonderful. I like you am a fabric junkie. Love Amarican fabric and quilts. I would like to know where you had that beautiful roller blind made out of the ( think you said table cloth)I have some lovely linen and cotton clothes which I would like to use in this way. Hope you can help and advice. Any chance of there crafts comeing out on CD. Sincerley margaret.
hi kirstie, love the new show, in fact i couldn't wait for the next episode each week. i've just looked up the cushion instructions and found them not very understandable, i will try and have a go and see how i get on. Thanks for a great programme, can we have more please! x hazel
Printing of Instructions. If you don't want to print out all the gumph attached just highlight each numbered section in turn, writing only, then: Click on file, click on print, click on selection and print it off. easy peasy!
Kirsty after a long period of illness this programme has really inspired me to do something different and i have found i am much more creative than i ever thought i was. There is nothing like the feeling of being able to look at some thing and think i made that!!!! Thanks so much can't wait for series 2... x
You never mentioned how to finish the cushion with the buttons and buttonholes.Other than that I found the pattern easy to follow. Love the programme.I have been making odds and sods out of anything all my life.
I really love this programme, it gets me through the week! Please do more! Also will you be bringing out a book with all your How-to guides in it? I hope you will!
Well I last used a sewing machine in school and have never made a single thing since. Unfortunately, I cannot follow these instructions! So I will be buying my cushions for a while yet lol
I found the instructions for the envelope cushin a little confusing. Also by the looks of things if you do not have a sewing machine, then you need one if you are not too great at sewing.
I think this such a great & inspirational program. Kirstie has a winner with this "Homemade Home". Keep up the good work. I really look forward to each episode, and hope there might be more programs like this one for us crafters. Thankyou.
Kirsty this is well and truly my absolute favourite programme! Really lovely. I have been inspired to get decorating my home. I am keen to get involved in some crafting and want to find an upholstery course.
I agree with others re the instructions and print options on this site they are not very good. Can you please tell me the full name and website address of 'Suzie' the woman who taught Kirstie to knit? Thanks
Hello Kirsty your show is great I love it. I can't wait to buy myself a sewing machine and get started making some envelope cushions. I look forward to your show every week. I agree that printing instructions off this site is not easy. Have you considered bringing out a book to accompany the series I am sure it would be a hit I would definately buy it for myself or as a good present for family/friends. Many thanks
great programme, but how much ink do you think i have in my printer? it would be good to have the designs/instructions etc laid out in a proper printable way. if you press 'print' , it prints the whole page
Hello Kirsty, What a treat to have a programme about homemaking, practical, self satisfying, down to earth crafts that you can gain so much from, I know, as I have been doing it all my life. I'm just about to go into my 70th year, and never tire of the fun of it all. Thankyou.
I agree, why can't you give us the option to print off the instructions, I can't very well keep dashing to the computer to get the next step when I making my cushions or the candles!
Yes the programme is good. This web site is not.I would like to be able to download/print the instructions for the cushion make/roman blind/candle,in one hit for each.It is not good web practice or sensible to have this info spread over six pages!! Keep the comments on a page set of thier own. This in my opinion would make for a cleaner site.
Hello, Your website is very good and i love the programme, kirsties homemade home I was wondering why she decided to start this programme? And can anybody like me have a chance to be on her programme? Im really excited for the bedroom because it will give me some ideas about my room Thank-you Very much...x
A good web site for practical do it yourself ideas but does Kirstie really think that the ordinary person has time to go glass blowing, stained glass making and candle making. Firstly where do we access such facilities, the costs of which are I should imagine amazingly high, and secondly, we lesser mortals when working, looking after the kids, cooking, shopping etc do not have the time nor energy to follow such pursuits to gain our dream home. A bit of a highbrow DIY program and did the kitchen really materialise from cast offs- i think not- built in new from what i could see.I should uses at ?15000 Only some of the accessories were from bring and buy. Interesting programme - but get real!!
just finished my first cushion cover!!! Yes the instructions are a bit confusing, I just replayed the programme on 4oD and followed the directions from the TV instead. Feeling really pleased with myself :)
To get the instructions onto less pages I've copied and pasted the text and photos into a word document and then resized the photos. It printed out fine and I managed to get it down to 2 A4 pages but it probably took as long to do as make the cushions themselves! I am a complete sewing novice and am rather confused by the instructions butI'll have a go. Great show though - thanks Kirsty!
Great programme but lousy instructions on the cushion as everyone says. Every time Kirsty came back with a trinket though to the kitchen, the builders had done major works! Magic, wish we could all find builders like that!! I've been doing this kind of stuff for our house for years with a very sceptical husband looking on. Now that Kirsty is doing it, somehow it is all fine. Thank you Kirsty for such a great programme and silencing my husband!
Great programme, Kirsty is brilliant and her enthusiasm is addictive .. Glad I'm not alone being confused by the instructions though, maybe her friend can pop round and give us all personal tuition then we'd be fine:) Looking forward to next week.
Amazing programme, i feel completely inspired. Have bought my fabric and will attempt to make the cusions with the help of my sister. I would also love to try and have a go at the pottery. carmela
Great programme but totally agree with the others totally impossible to print these instructions. If you click on print you expect to get the whole document in a printable format, surely?
Have to agree the instructions were a nightmare. One page please. If you don't sort it out I'll refrain from looking up the website in future. Very frustrating.

Having just bought my first home I am looking for inspiring ideas and believe that Kirstie is the lady to deliver them - I am so glad she got this show! I got a sewing machine for Christmas and would love to use it to make these cushions. As many have said though, they are a little difficult to follow and would be great if they were simplified with a diagram all on one page so they are easy to follow. Maybe a downloadable pdf so I could save it as a document for future reference and print off to use at the machine. I'm worried that the instructions will disappear after this week and the idea will be lost forever! Please Channel 4, please listen to the feedback and update the instructions. Thank you!
Loved the programme and look forward to other episodes, but agree with all other comments re. the cushion making instructions, very unclear. Would it be possible to supply a one page instruction leaflet or diagram, please!!
Really enjoyed the show and was excited about making the cushion, but unfortunately the instructions have left been bewildered. Can you please re-do in a much simpler to follow way and please give an easy option for printing as difficult running backwards and forward between machine and PC!
I agree with other comments and vert keen to make the cushion but the instructions were unclear and had to print each page separately. A single instruction sheet that could be printed on an A4 sheet would be really useful. Joyz
Have just logged on to check out the cushion instructions. Whoops - not that clear to be honest. My 14 and 12 year old daughters are going to show me what to do instead. Perhaps you could do an instruction sheet on one piece of A4 in future so the instructions can be printed off on one sheet, and of course be much simpler than the current explanation. Thank you, programme excellent and inspiring otherwise.
It would have been more useful if the cushion instructions were available in a PDF to download. Otherwise, an exciting, inspirational programme, well done!
Loved the programme, keen to make the cushions but like the other comments have found the instructions very confusing. Please would you rewrite them with easier to understand instructions. Thank you.
Loved the programme! Has made me want to go and 'furkle' round junk shops to my hearts content this weekend! Will definitely be having a go at the cushions - a great first prject as I've just been bought a sewing machine! Keep it coming Kirstie!! Em
I have made cushions etc. for years but found the instructions for the envelope cushion very confusing. I had hoped to e-mail them to a friend but think it would be more simple to have her come to my home and follow my simple instructions. Programme was great.
I thought the show was great! I loved the original take on interior designing and it has inspired me to decorate my home in my own, personal style, rather than worrying whether other people would like it. Thank you for making a program that is fun and inspiring at the same time.
I thought the show was very inspiring, it made such a change to the normal route where everyone goes and buys brand new all the time. It reached all types of audiences as it showed what came be acheived even it your budget is very minimal. Thanks Kirsty for being so down to earth and realising what real life is about.
I am not a novice here, but these instructions are as clear as mud. Could you please give more definite and clear instructions. Loved the programme, it was such welcome change from the sterile makeovers which removing all character and interest from homes and frankly all look the same. Looking forward to next week to see what other inspirational ideas there will be.
I loved the programme and it has made me look to by a sewing machine and buy from charity shops! I looked over the instructions, even though i already know how to make a cushion, but the instructions were not very clear. To make them clearer maybe you should do a video? But the programme really inspired me.
Hi everyone!Loved the show! This is something ive done for a while-always scouring charity shops and antique shops for individual bits and pieces, and i paint alot of furniture too. For people having hassle with printing-when you hit print and the computer's print page comes up, select to print only page 1 instead of all pages and this should stop the problem. Hope it helps and please dont be put off having a go!Soooo satisfying to creat something yourself :) happy watching!!
Quite a refreshing take on this programme -however cushion making demonstration and instructions were not sufficient- left a lot to the imagination -should also be available on one page
Hmm. Have been reading comments whilst printing off the cushion instructions and yes I have 6 copies of the comments printed - someone owes me some paper! Really loved the programme and felt inspired to get the machine out again (after many many years) but not sure whether to have a go with this particular pattern or not now which is a shame. Might have a go and do my own thing though. Perhaps the website could do with a bit of a revamp! Want to go rummaging for bargains now, my husband is a skip raider already and is off this afternoon to collect more wood for his ever increasing wood mountain!Well done Kirsty and I will be watching next week - can't wait to see what you inspire us with next time. xx
Although I have many years experience of dressmaking and making soft furnishings, I still like to look at diagrams and instructions. I must agree with all the other comments that the instructions for making the cushion are appalling. I also noticed that even in the programme the picture didn't match what was being done. When Kirsty was sewing a straight seam, the camera showed her doing a zig-zag stitch! However, I loved the programme and I hope there will be more sewing sessions in it.
I agree 100% with the comments made, about the instructions and about having to print off each page. I'm quite good at sewing and was looking forward to getting the instructions but find them very confusing. I wish the programme showed the cushions being made step by step instead of hurrying through it. Great idea for a programme and makers should look to doing more craft type shows for those of us that like hands on hobbies.
I'm an experienced sewer and these instructions leave alot to be desired. Many more people would be able to make the cover (which is what you want?) if you improved them. It would also help if the photographs matched what was going on in the instructions. If you don't get this right, viewers will try to make things and leave frustrated because it didn't seem to work. This surely defeats the entire aim of the programme. Love the programme idea!
Again, loved the programme but these instructions are NOT helpful at all. And it's very frustrating having to print the instructions a page at a time, and getting all our email comments as well!
agreed with the other comments need a clearer instruction but will try making the first one out of some scrap material to see if it works love the program always wanted to do this type of thing it gives me confidence to try.
I agree with Anna. I did 'A' level needlework at school and then studied needlework at College for three years so could work out for myself how to make this cushion but these instructions and illustrations are far from explanatory. Enjoyed the programme though.
Please could you put the instructions to make a cushion onto one simple printable page, I am very keen to make it but not just yet and would like to be able to print it off to do at another time. I loved the programme. I want Kirsty's kitchen!
I've sewn quite a few things successfully but I got lost at step 3 in these instructions. Would like to see instructions for a square cushion instead of one with different length to width. Loved the programme though and look forward to the rest of the series.
Would appreciate clearer instructions please. The pictures don't help. Also the cushion on the tv programme had buttons, but not sure whether these were just for decoration or button-holed. Enjoyed the programme.
Please re-write these instructions in a more simple manner, am not a complete novice but don't understand them and really want to make these cushions!!!
Mmm. I'm actually not that bad at sewing, but seriously, I don't understand these instructions at all! Really enjoyed the programme, but could you consider re-doing these instructions please?
what a wonderful programme full of inspiring ideas I am going to make the cushions tomorrow! It was great to have the bargain hunting tips and the colour scheme of the tableware We need more programmes like this and what a lovely presenter Well done channel 4 and Kirsty
