Roman blinds are a neat way to dress windows, and have enough detail to look decorative rather than purely functional. Dowels sewn into pockets at regular intervals across the blind - and cord through the rings on the dowels - create the folds when the blind is pulled up.

Time required:

Half a day.

Cost:

Around £40, depending on your choice of fabric.

Skill level:

You need to be confident with sewing machine.

You’ll need:

Tape measure; scissors; fabric; lining fabric, plus extra to create dowel pockets; pins; sewing machine; thread; tailors’ chalk; dowels cut to 3cm less than blind width; needle; blind rings; wooden batten the same width as the blind; Velcro Sew & Stick Drill and drill bits; wall plugs; screw eyes; Roman blind cord; blind acorn; cleat and screws

Get Started...

couple-measuring-window

Step One

Measure the window so you know the drop and width you’ll need the blind to be. Add 5cm to the width and drop for hems. Cut out the blind fabric and lining fabric. Right sides together and matching raw edges, take a 2.5cm seam and pin and sew the fabric and lining at the sides and at bottom. Turn right side out and press.

  1. I find these instructions and photographs very visually and aurally stimulating, but not so simple and clear as instructions perhaps ought.

  4. I love the programme, It has inspired me to try new things and to make things for my home, like the roman blinds, brilliant, please could you make a DVD with all the tips and ideas on, and so glad that you are showing the real trades and crafts men and women that make things to last .We live in such a disposable world its nice to see that the true crafts haven't died. There are so many ideas when you look around the home of how to give it that personal touch , its just knowing how to do it.Love the series, more and more please.

  5. Great series! Its inspired me & gave me lots & lots of ideas. We havent got much money to update the style in our house so some of the tips were excellent & I'm going to give them a go! Looking forward to the next series, same sort of format please. Nice to have something to watch on TV thats not all about MDF, & gives you ideas of how to make stuff yourself and where to go looking for things. Well done!

  6. It was a real delighted to watch this series and I hope Kirsty will be taking on another, similar project soon. Or just repeat the series, so I can check to make sure I didn't miss anything. It was quite inspiring to see what you can do to make your home unique and often at no great cost. I despair of the number of people who seem to want only beige or magnolia houses, filled with bland items from shop directories or catalogues. People, where's our imagination, our love of colour, our individuality and flair? I want my home to reflect my own life and personality, not to look like every other show home in the country. Thank you to Kirsty and to Channel 4 for producing this programme, to show what you can do for yourself and for proving that you can buck the current bland trend and come up with something delightful instead. More please.

  10. Loved this series, as did my husband, much to his embarassment. I'm looking forward to rummaging around bootsales, and antique shops. I'm not very good at making stuff, but this has inspired me to try! PLEASE do another series, and a book with all your handy tips?

  11. I just wanted to congratulate Kirsty on making such a fabulous program. I enjoyed every minute of watching the house become a home with the help of english craft and talent. It was so inspiring and rewarding I can't wait to get my own property and get stuck in. I have so many ideas buzzing! Well done it is about time traditional crafts have been celebrated and recognised. Can't wait for the next adventure Kirsty! Natalie Pascoe

  13. Fantastic programme Kirstie, I love to watch your enthusiasm and you give credibility to many of the things I have done (ie skipping)! Is there anywhere I could get patterns for the knitted door stop?

  14. Do you have single glazing on the windows at Meadowgate? If so is the property listed or were the windows restored rather than replaced?

  15. Wow! I have loved this programme! Some ideas were a little above my price range but do-able with a bit of imagination. I am going to have a go at a roman blind using the 'How to' feature on this site. I've got builders in at the moment due to subsidence so am rethinking my decor and soft furnishings. Luckily insurance paying for paint and wallpaper so almost a free rein with these. I now need to search for craft courses in Shropshire! Look forward to a dvd, book and the next series!

  21. What an inspiration. My husband is cursing you, you have re-ignited my interest in interior design, it had gone into remission for the past two years. Since watching your wonderful programme I've stripped my bedroom, am currently scouring the UK for vintage wardrobes (ART DECO is my passion)and have found some retro fabric for cushions. I'm off to an antique emporium tomorrow for a good old rummage!! I can knit, crochet, dress make, reupholster, patchwork, cross stitch and so on & on, I love anything crafty. Thank you so much I don't want this series to end.

  22. I absolutely loved the Kirsties Homemade Home. Having spent my life rearing my kids - now adults all but one, I have re-discovered my passion for craft and reading then saw your programme and it was an orgasmic experience just having the sensation of all the wonderful fabrics, ideas and possibilities of design. Having recently been ill this is just what I need to try and get back on my feet and do up my tired boring home which has been neglected looking after kids, their needs, my courses as been re-training for new career and also challenge of being single parent. Thanks for giving my vision and re-igniting my passion for making my own home furnishings. I hope we see more in the future. Any people needed to take part in future shows, count me in and my home if necessary!!!! You cheered up my evening.

  23. Kirstie, what a fabulous programme, I am really enjoying it especially as I am trying to do a similar thing myself with my house in france. Until we took early retirement here I was a modern minimilist fan but with a 150+ year old house my values have changed and I am trying very hard to get into the french country style, warm, and welcoming and now being early retired the pennies are very important in that I can't afford to make mistakes. Your programme has helped me expand my thoughts. A big warm thank you to you. Christina

  24. utterly fantastic programme. totally inspired, unfortunately husband looked horrified when i said i wanted to do what kirsty does with the house. so if i have to live in this boring coloured house, i will have to somehow discover a potion that gives graphic designers less of an opinion when a woman wants to make a house a home. keep up the good work. wish we had more programmes like it.

  35. Fantastic programme tonight and promises to be an excellent series, well done Kirstie! As a recently qualified Interior Designer, it gave me the inspiration and confidence to not be 'run of the mill' with my business and really try to be different in my approach to designing, which is why I wanted to be a designer in the first place. Looking forward to the rest of the series!
