Yes, lampshades are available on every high street, but the only way to get a bespoke look, with a fabric style and colour to match your room perfectly, is to make your own.

In the sitting rooms episode of Kirstie’s Homemade Home, I met lampshade designer Eileen Garsed, who explained the three main types of lampshade: tailored, pleated and hard frame. Hard frame is probably the simplest, so as a novice, that's the type of shade I created - with Eileen's help - and that is what we're going to do here.

Skill level: It's fairly easy to make a simple lampshade, but hard to do neatly. Even this hard frame shade is quite fiddly and requires real concentration!

Cost: Around £20 for the kit (rings, backing material, sticky tape), plus whatever material you want to use

Time required: Unlike me, you will probably take it slowly, like Eileen advises! So allow yourself a good hour.

You'll need: Wire frame rings (top and bottom); PVC backing material; fabric (satin, velvet, rayon, cotton dress material or curtain fabric is fine, but open weave fabrics are not suitable as dust and dirt will adhere to the exposed areas of the backing material); double-sided sticky tape; braiding or bias binding to decorate (optional)

  2. Hey, It was so lovely to see Kirstie Allsopp in a programe produced for chanel four, that encourages us all to make items for our home and remind us that we have so many talented crafts people in the UK that we should take advantage of. I have been making my own curtains and cushions for the past two years (I still have much to learn) and have just spend a day making my own lamp shade(I think I've gone over the top with ribbons and dangly bits!) oh well, its fun to experiment! Partner James and I, now have hens and grow our own vegetables (Barbara and Tom springs to mind!) I also am a part time artist specialising in portraiture of all kinds, I need to master all of these things I do and will have fun doing so. I need to give up my full time job and persue all the creative things I enjoy! Enough waffle from me...ta ta for now x

  4. THere are two companies that provide the stuff to make your own lampshades. www.duffylondon.com and www.needcraft.co.uk both supply a kit and the needcraft site will also provide all of the individual bits and pieces you need to make your own, postage is expensive from needcraft though and is cheaper from the Duffy site. Hope this Helps you all

  5. It is interesting to read comments about lampshade making. I live in Shropshire and have been providing a re-covering service for some time. New ones are almost impossible to make because, unlike a few years ago, there is no manufacturer in UK to supply to new frames, which is very sad. The customers I have had have been in the proces of re-furbishing their home and I have re-covered lampshades to match furnishings. All different shapes and sizes. As someone else commented - the best place to buy a frame now is the charity or second hand shop, strip it down and re-cover. That way it is possible to get the more tradition shapes. I have made literally hundreds over the years so if anyone wishes to contact me to have a chat about the method I would be pleased to have an email. I too watched Kirsty's programme with interest.

  6. It's lovely to see Kirsty making all these different things, I do agree tho that it's really hard to find all the equipment to do this. I too would like some suppliers in the UK for lampshade frames etc as I recently had to resort to stripping an old frame for making a shade in the colour/fabric I wanted. For a novice I would suggest a charity shop or car boot to see how good you are before buying more expensive hoops. Mine did the job for me, but I'd like to now try some more. This programme is great - I thought I was the only 'nut' who made things when I couldn't find them in the shop (or the price was too high). More craft prgrammes would get us all sewing/knitting/painting etc instead of spending large amounts in shops during this 'credit crunch' - Well done C4 !!!(and Kirsty of course!) Julie

  9. Hi, I have been searching pretty hard as I too was inspired. For a small simple kit the only option seems to be 'Duffy London' (?10) who source it from a bigger lampshade making company. I also found a website that sells all the separate parts but figured i'd try the kit before going all out. Good luck! However is C4 can supply other suggest other suppliers that'd be great.

  10. Calling Channel 4 producers. Is there anyone out there? Please please please let us know where to buy lampshade kits. Or if there are any budding entrepreneurs out there, perhaps someone could fill this gap in the market??!! It would be lovely to be able to have a go at making a lampshade or three. I have the ideas just none of the basic materials.

  11. Silly question, but am DYING to know - anyone know where she got the beautiful blue-and-white tie-dyed dress she wore during the cake-decorating segment?? Love the show - I'm from Newfoundland, where it's still very much the norm to do handycrafts as a part of everyday life - am so glad to finally find places in the UK to get supplies and to find inspiration!

  12. Hi I am learning to make Lampshades - all to a high standard and with professional level, as part of a city & guilds course at my local college (Kingston upon Thames)(6 hours per week). The lampshade course is part of the Soft Furnishings Level 2 course (at present you also learn to make blinds and bolster cushions) but from September they are offering individual modules for individual subject e.g. Lampshade making. Contact City & Guilds (www.cityandguilds.com) - they should tell you where your local college/venue is to learn how to make them. Good luck! PS it is worth learning - they are great fun to make

  13. I agree, there is absolutely no information on where to buy these lampshade making kits or any classes in this country. I've scoured the internet and only the USA seems to run classes or sell kits. Channel 4 please give us some practical information otherwise this program is pointless.

  14. Does anybody actually take any notice of these e-mails as everybody seems to have the same challenge - where can you find the basic materials to have a go at making your own lampshades? How frustrating it is!

  15. I am loving the programme too but must agree that it is very frustrating when you can't find suppliers so you can get started. I would love to make my own lampshades but am finding it almost impossible to find kits except in the USA! HELP!!!??

  16. It seems a great shame that a programme has been made about making things at home, yet there are no links posted to show where to buy the materials needed which we are all struggling to find; in addition to this no-one from C4 seems bothered to respond to our questions to let us know where to buy these products from. It makes the show seem a little pointless really...

  27. Eileen Garsed was recommended to us when we moved to Gloucestershire 12 years ago. It was a pleasant surprise to see her on Kirsty's programme. Eileen Garsed's lampshades are still in our sitting room and looking as smart and elegant as the day Eileen made them.
