Putting a group of pictures behind a bed head will have the same effect as a showy headboard - it will turn that part of the room into a focal point. How to hang them? They needn't be all the same size or even fit the space neatly. However, the pattern they form once hung should be neat and uniform - at the very least in the spaces between the pictures themselves.
