To create this display:
The giant Allium, which is part of the onion family, grows easily in the garden but is also available at the florists during the summer and autumn. Take a garden container (it will need lining with a plastic bag if it is not waterproof; this pot is 18cm tall), then place the pinholder (or floral foam, from florists) at the bottom and fill with water. Cut the stem of the Allium so that once positioned in the container, the whole will be around three times the height of the container. Cut the stems of the foliage (Judith has used Skimmia) short and angle them out of the foam or pinholder (the stems will need to be longer if you're using a pinholder). Holding the ends of two lengths of tapestry wool to pick up the lime of the leaves and purple of the flowers, wrap these neatly around the stem, roughly halfway up. Tuck the ends in on themselves or tie at the back.
