Ideal for a contemporary living room, this sofa bed is not so much pull-out as push-down, and can transform very quickly into a roomy double. We particularly love its minimalist design and the smart felt upholstery. Felt sofa bed, £475, Muji (H79xW198xD76cm)

Good-looking enough for the living room, this stylish model is truly comfy in both sofa and bed incarnation, and is a real bargain. The 11cm-thick mattress is padded enough for a good night's sleep and the pull-out mechanism is nice and robust. Karlanda two-seat sofa bed in red, £560, Ikea (H83xW182xD95cm)

We love the modern looks of this sofa bed. A pushdown, it will transform with minimum fuss. It's probably the firmest of the selection, both as a bed and as a seat, but it's still comfortable and great for impromptu sleepovers. It's available in grey and beige. Zen sofa bed in dark grey fabric, £699, Bo Concept (H78xW197xD95cm)

Perfect for the playroom, this neat little sofa turns into a dinky double bed at the drop of a hat with a nifty, but sturdy, metal-action mechanism. And with a micro fibre cover, it's very easy to keep clean. Also available as a seat, a similar version with arms or a three seater and a range of colours. Dizzy sofa bed in sky blue, £450, John Lewis (H82xW124xD89cm).

  2. Hi. It's nice to see that you're putting some focus on Sofabeds, but I think your 'meta name description' stating "forget futons...etc" is a little unfair!! Many futons can be very comfortable, durable and keep thier style throughout the years, and, best of all in these 'credit crunch' days, offer excellent value for money. Like everything on the high street, you get what you pay for. So, yes, if you pop-in to your local catalogue store and buy a cheapy futon you may well be binning it after a poor nights sleep, but there are many retailers who will offer quality selections of futons backed up by many years experience and friendly service. So, think again.....a futon may be exactly what you're looking for!!
