You will find that most sofa beds pull out from the seat, and this is usually the most reliable type, especially if the bed is metal-action, with a proper mattress.
A lot of contemporary models have backs that push down, which are very easy to use, but remember - the more you pay, the more reliable the mechanism will be. You can also buy foldout beds made of foam, but these aren't the most comfortable and probably won't last as long.
If you're buying in store, get a sales assistant to demonstrate the bed mechanism, then have a go yourself. If you find it a real struggle, move on to another model. Oh, and when it's folded out, have a good lie down. Most bed lengths average around 194 cm, but obviously the longer the better - unless, of course, you don't have the room to accommodate it. And, as a rule, bed bases that combine wooden slats with webbing offer the best support.
Don't forget to check it out as a sofa. Some sofa beds look good but are desperately uncomfortable to sit on, so if yours is going to be in your living area, make sure it's sink-in-able.
Sofa beds are incredibly heavy (and often the heavier ones are the best quality), so bear this in mind if you are planning to haul yours upstairs to the spare room.
