So, you can't find exactly what you're looking for in the shops or you're bored of that cheap but cheerful piece you bought in our favourite Swedish store? Then why not hack it? Chop it up, add bits on, paint it, turn it upside down and add wheels... the sky's the limit. Here are our favourites.

Sideboard by Ted Davis
To create his cool sideboard, Ted Davis used the Ikea Akurum kitchen wall cabinets (not available in this country, but Faktum will work just as well), Capita legs and some stainless steel kitchen doors (all Ikea). An ebony stained, ash veneered top, trimmed with standard edging from a hardware store were used to finish it off. The sides are covered in custom-cut stainless steel.
Faktum double base unit with shelves, £56; Capita legs, from £5 for a pack of four 11cm legs, all Ikea.

After making a basic framework, Andrew La Fleur used the head and foot board from the Hemnes daybed to create the back of his kitchen banquette. He then covered the rest of the frame using the main back piece from the bed. It was finished it off with moulding around the bottom and seat cushions made with padded fabric.
Teamed here with a trimmed down Ikea Docksta table.
Hemnes daybed, £220; Docksta table, £95, both Ikea.

Erica Candy, Editor of Cribcandy and Popgloss made this gorgeous sofa table using the legs from an old Ikea Imfors coffee table. Erica cut a sheet of sanded and varnished bamboo plywood straight down the middle to create the two shelves, then simply screwed them onto the legs from the table. Simple, but clever.
Imfors coffee table, £69.90, Ikea.
