A room without focus - particularly a big room - will always look chaotic (if it's cluttered) or soulless (if it's tidy). So, adding a rug, buying or repositioning a good-looking piece of furniture, and rearranging your lighting to draw attention to the new area will have an instant effect. Be prepared to play around with the furniture and accessories a bit until you find out what works, and keep in mind ath defined areas - in other words, a space for tv, a space for homework or dining... and so on - will help a room feel bigger and better.
