Ever since architects hastened the onset of the open-plan living space, kitchens have undergone something of a transformation. In fact, these days the most chic of kitchens often looks like anything but...

Shows like Grand Designs and Property Ladder often feature kitchens whose design ethos shows a contempt for the conventional. Kitchen buyers across the country are deserting the dull, utilitarian kitchens of yesterday in favour of sleek centerpieces whose role is not simply to be an area to prepare food, but a central hub of activity in the modern home.

It's not just cupboards and work surfaces that have come on leaps and bounds. Take this extractor hood, disguised as a lamp and similar to that used in the Cheltenham Underground House Grand Design. This type of dual purpose disguise is typical of the deliciously seductive kitchen designs coming out of Italy.
